It was the works- scrubbing base boards, re-organizing closets, dusting in every nook and cranny, etc. Anyone who knows me well, knows that I hate to dust. I would actually prefer to scrub every bathroom in the house than to dust even one item. I suppose that's why I have to come up with little things to entertain myself while dusting. Thankfully, I have a vivid imagination, so while vacuuming the soffits in my kitchen, I found myself wondering where all this dirt came from. Dirt isn't new. Like water, we just keep using it over and over. However, it occurred to me that, unlike water, we do get dirt when living organisms break down after...you know... death. Hmmm. Now, that's an interesting thought. There was enough dust up there to belong to a hippo or possibly a megalodon! In the end I decided that it might have been a long, lost conquistador, so I'm thinking of dumping that bucket of dust into an envelope and mailing him back to Spain.

And THAT ladies and gentlemen is your glimpse for the day into the workings of my brain. ;)
We've had two sick nannies, so R and S have had to bottle feed up to five babies several times a day. In honor of their efforts, this week's "You might be a homeschooler" is.....

You might be a home schooler if this is your classroom and these are your classmates.
Our nannies have finally started having their kids. So far, 13 were born, and there are several more nannies that have yet to deliver. Here is our set of triplets, Bennett, Molly, Abigail. {I think I hear a collective "awwwww" in there!} I love the fact that my children can enjoy seeing this process. They learn so much from the experience each year.
OK, Here it goes. You might be a home schooler if you find yourself dissecting owl pellets at your dining room table with the family gathered around.

I purchased one for each child along with a sheet that helps to indentify the various bones and animals that may be found in the pellets. For the record, an owl pellet is the bone and fur that the owl can not digest from his meal, so it vomits this up as a "pellet". By taking this delightful, little wad of refuse apart, you are able to determine what the owls diet consists of. Upon examination, we determined that our pellets contained 8 rodent skulls, several rodent hip bones, numerous spinal bones, and LOADS of fur. Oh, and YES, I did thoroughly scour the table after this little project! :o/
Last year, I spent a great deal of time preparing a time line for my children. It included everything that we had studied throughout the school year in ancient history. To say that it was a rather large project would be an understatement, as I'm sure it could easily stretch across the length of a gymnasium. Towards the end of the school year, I decided it was time to unveil this fantastic exhibition of my handiwork, and so began an ill fated afternoon of disaster.
It was a still and quiet afternoon, but as I began to ceremoniously unfurl the timeline, the wind began to gust. My children tried to provide as much support as possible to the fragile timeline in the face of what now seemed to have become a small hurricane. I frantically tried to roll the paper back up as quickly as possible, but try as we may, I returned inside with five shredded chunks of timeline as opposed to the one, large, pristine roll that I went out with. It was covered with wrinkles, rips, smudges, and likely a few tears and drops of sweat too. I was so frustrated and angry, that I shoved it under the desk in our study where it sat in "time out" for almost six months. As our school year begins anew, I decided it was time to pull it back out and repair the damage as best as possible, and although I have told this story rather tongue-in-cheek, I did learn a few things from the experience.

The example I set when dealing with adversity is a much more important lesson to my children than a timeline will ever be.

Tape works for broken time lines, but not for broken feelings. "Sorry" works better for that.

Always check the weather before unfurling your work or beauty! ;)

We had looked for a long time before finding the right one for us, so we were really excited to take her on her first voyage recently!! We went to O'Leno State Park and then took everyone tubing down the Ichetucknee River. What an awesome time!! If you're looking for some fun, I highly recommend it, but arrive early. There are only a certain number of tubers permitted in each day. This is done to help protect the pristine nature of this beautiful river. You can choose from the long 3 hour float trip to other shorter versions. There are also springs to swim in at the Ichetucknee Park if you would rather not tube.
It evokes emotion, speaks a message even when we least expect it. Sarah accepted Christ earlier this year, and it was as a result of one song. Her dad and I had talked to her several times, but it was four little words in a Toby Mac song that brought her to me one morning saying I need to get saved NOW. What were the words? "It's ride or die" -a simple message.
The Bible says that all of our good deeds are like filthy rags to God. No matter how good you think you are, no one is good enough. However, God sent his Son, Jesus, to pay for all of our sins by dying on the cross for us. He paved the way for us to be "good enough" simply by believing that Jesus is the Son of God, recognizing that none of us are good enough on our own, and asking God to forgive you and give you this gift of salvation. I hope you enjoy the song!
Most people know that we live on a goat ranch. We have between 35-55 goats on the property, depending on when you ask, as well as various other animals. We love the opportunity farm living has provided for our children to learn about life and death. They have watched the birth of our goats, and they've witnessed the cycle of life in countless ways. It's not always easy watching them grieve for a favorite goat that has died, but I know it's an important life lesson.
However, I'm fairly certain that what they witnessed today will surpass all of the things they have ever had to learn. As we were leaving for church this morning, we noticed that the donkey was acting strangely. As we got a little closer, we realized he was attacking the preemie baby goat that had been born a week or so ago. This baby goat has become the pride and joy of my children. It took several minutes to get out to them, and all the while, he proceeded to stomp, bite, and kick this poor defenseless baby. We were all shocked, since this donkey always loves on the new babies. It was just surreal, seeing such a senseless and vicious attack. I was crushed that my children had to witness something so violent, especially when it involved something that is so precious to them. They were obviously quite upset by the whole ordeal.
Once we got the donkey away, I truly expected to find a broken, dead baby, but miraculously it was still alive. We took him to my dad, who splinted his broken leg, and, as silly as it might sound to some people, we prayed. We believe God cares about even the little things in life. Well, we later found this goat actually standing up and nursing from its mother. It was truly a miracle that he was alive at all, much less able to stand a few hours later! It will definitely take some time for him to heal completely, and it will probably take some time for my children to work through everything they saw. But, I know they have already walked away from this incident with a greater faith in God, and a very BIG lesson that life is not always a beautiful fairytale!
Has it been that long since I last posted something? It has just been so busy around here. I am approaching the summer season with my business, Delightful Sounds, which is always a really busy time.

Anyway, I wanted to update everyone on our progress with our monthly service projects that we had planned to do this school year. In January, we got together with some other home school friends to make around 50 hand-made Valentine cards. We were able to hand these cards out at a local nursing home in February. The children were able to join the seniors for a portion of the facility's Valentine's party, and they sang a song for them. It was a beautiful experience for the children as well as the adults.

Everyone was so excited about how they were able to minister to the elderly, so in March we decided to do an orientation to become volunteers with VISTE. They are a non-profit organization that provides food and transportation to the elderly in their area. We are hoping to use our April service project to begin working with them.

Have you done any interesting service projects lately? I'd love to get some more ideas!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007411646354465991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8620126026051555991.post-64903320663361229622010-03-31T07:34:00.000-07:002010-03-31T07:40:32.018-07:00anguishI have been broken-sent weeping my repentance before God. I heard about it from a group of home school friends that were really happy with the money they were able to save each week at the grocery store. It's basically about purchasing large numbers of items when the price is at its lowest. You can then stock these items for later use at home. It took me several weeks to start saving enough coupons, but last week I was able to save almost $50 at the grocery store. Some of the savings are local, but others are not. In fact, after reading this recent post, I was able to get $30 of restaurant gift cards online for under $3! Go check it out for yourself!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007411646354465991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8620126026051555991.post-70319084009240729772010-03-23T13:46:00.000-07:002010-03-23T14:02:49.040-07:00In the MomentA couple of years ago, the phrase "in the moment" had become my mantra. We had recently gone through the deaths of several family members within a rather short period of time. It made me so much more aware of how precious life really is. But, time heals all things, and eventually I found myself slipping back into the fast lane of life. There were school projects, marketing projects and lesson plans for my business, and where did all this dirty laundry come from!

This year has really brought me full circle. Being a first-time home school mom, I have slowed down with all the other "stuff" and had to really focused on what my children are thinking and doing. I have been amazed, iritated, laughed till I'm breathless, broken, and so much more, but I am so thankful that I have been able to experience each and every one of these moments with my beautiful children! It has drawn us closer and given us more compassion than ever before. Do you have any favorite moments you've shared with your child lately?
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007411646354465991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8620126026051555991.post-42475668038647830192010-03-14T12:09:00.000-07:002010-03-14T12:12:13.341-07:00Zoo school

Another recent field trip we have attended was to the Busch Gardens Zoo School for home schools. It was an all day field trip with interactive animal sessions and a guided walking tour. (Rides were not included in the cost, much to my childrens disappointment.) The picture is of one of the tigers we encountered on the walking tour. The focus was on animal adaptations, and it was neat to see all of the thoughts and ideas that the kids came up with. The Pizza Hut BOOK IT! program is taking enrollment for home school children in grades 2-6. You can enroll here for the 2010-2011 school year. The program runs October through March and rewards children with a free pizza each time they meet their reading goal for the month. We loved this program when we were in a traditional school and are so excited to participate in it again!
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007411646354465991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8620126026051555991.post-24330547172467192712010-02-17T08:42:00.000-08:002010-02-17T10:01:31.625-08:00Enlighten Me!

I haven't posted as much as I would like. We've just been so busy lately that there simply hasn't been time. One of my goals with home schooling this year was to provide more enrichment in my children's education. I hoped to accomplish this with hands on activities both in and out of our home.

One of our recent field trips was to the Alafia Rendevous. The participants dress in period costumes and spend the week trading, selling, and enjoying activities related to the daily life of an early frontier family. I added a picture of the Indian camp here. There are only a couple of days that are open to the general public. It was great fun to learn more about this interesting time of our country's history. What a great opportunity for hands on learning! My children are hoping to actually participate next year in costume. We'll see... :)

So what fun enrichment activities have you been up to lately?

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007411646354465991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8620126026051555991.post-46503993155763693802010-02-07T15:22:00.000-08:002010-02-07T15:55:21.953-08:00datingDear potential son-in-law:

Thank you for your interest in dating my daughter. While I appreciate your desire to get to know my beautiful daughter better, I feel it is my duty to inform you of a few things in advance. It might save us both some time and trouble in the long run. First, you should understand that my daughters are being raised as ladies, not merely women. This means they will expect you to treat them like a lady. If you do not plan to open their doors for them, ring the doorbell to pick them up, pay for the date without expecting "anything in return", and walk them to the door when they return home, then don't bother coming in the first place. As a Christian lady, they will also expect your language and behavior to be honorable to the Lord. After all, I've told them that you never know who you will fall in love with. If a boy does not seem worthy of consideration as a potential spouse, then don't waste your time dating him. And on the subject of dating and marriage, we have also explained to them that sex is a gift that should be reserved for marriage. If you don't feel the same, then feel free to go date someone else.
I realize that all of these thoughts and boundaries will greatly reduce the number of potential suitors for my daughters, and I couldn't be happier about that. From what I've seen, there isn't much to choose from, and I'm hoping to save them a great deal of trouble and heart ache, by weeding out the bad ones before you ever even bother calling this house.
Now if, per chance, you do make it through the selection process and are fortunate enough to one day marry my daughter, there is one more thing you should expect. They have been taught to love, support, and honor you as the head of their house. They will be able to freely do this, because, as a Godly husband, you will be loving them more than you love your own life, and therefore, will always have their best interest at heart in your decisions. Their father and I are already praying for you, and I look forward to meeting you. (just not for a long time yet, ok?)

Sincerely,
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007411646354465991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8620126026051555991.post-56743319287184834602010-01-30T12:04:00.000-08:002010-01-30T12:18:54.654-08:00Where did you learn that?!?

If you follow this blog, then you already know that we have been studying ancient Egypt in history. Last week we learned about Hatshepsut, the first female Pharaoh of Egypt. She was a peaceful ruler and led many expeditions into Africa to purchase gold, monkeys, and other items from the people there.

As I tested the girls on this section Friday I asked S, "What was Hatshepsut best known for, aside from being the first female Pharaoh?" Without hesitation she responded, "She went shopping in Africa to spend money like any woman should!"

When I finished laughing, I gave her a 100%.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15007411646354465991noreply@blogger.com0
